Family Types
Although each oil does have its own unique scent at a more general level they can be grouped into the following nine basic scent types. Each will have a greater appeal to different people so a good initial starting place for many people, when building their collection is to have one from each group.
Earthy/Rooty - From roots or subterranean parts of plants
Examples: Spikenard, Valerian and Vetiver
Seedy - extracted from seeds
Examples: Nutmeg, Coriander and Fennel
Woody - from the wood or twigs of trees
Examples: Sandalwood, Rosewood and Cinnamon
Herbaceous - extracted from traditional herbs
Examples: Basil, Clary Sage and Rosemary
Spicy - extracted from traditional spices
Examples: Black Pepper, Ginger and Clove
Citrus / Fruit - distilled or expressed from fruits
Examples: Bergamot, Juniper Berry and Orange
Floral - oils or absolutes derived from flowers or petals
Examples: Lavender, Chamomile and Jasmin
Green / Leafy - extracted from tree leaves or plants
Examples: Tea Tree, Bay and Petitgrain
Resinous / Balsamic - oils extracted from tree resins
Examples: Myrrh, Frankincense and Benzoin
Anyone wanting to explore this area of aromatherapy further will find a good section in Valerie Ann Worwood's excellent book "The Fragrant Mind".
